“From 1886 - The oldest continuing cycle race in the world” held on Sunday 11th October at Yorks Hill, Kent, North Downs.

Many people had national cyclo-cross champion Jody Crawforth (Artic Premier RT) down to repeat his 2008 Catford win but this time he was decisively beaten into the runner-up position by 2.7secs . The rider who surprised everyone, including himself was Robert Gough (Chippenham & Dist Wh.). The only rider to break the 2 minute barrier Robert said “I certainly hadn’t expected to win today”. But this really shouldn’t have come as a surprise because Robert Gough has been knocking on the door for some time being 4th last year and 3rd in 2008.

Third this year was ‘newcomer’ Matthew Melville riding for awcycles.co.uk with a time of 2mim 9.5secs.
Supported by Matt Holmes 9th and Danny Axford 10th, Jody Crawforth once again led the Artic Premier RT team to victory.

Having won two hill climbs on the previous week-end local hero Peter Tadros (In Gear Quickvit RT) was thought to be a contender but in the event he only managed 15th place.

Phil Mason’s 26 year old record of Imin 47.6 secs was never under threat as times this year were considerable slower. Conditions were not ideal on this 1 in 4 hill because although the rain held off some riders reported wheel slip on the greasy surface.

Filling the honoured position as last rider off 64 year old Max Pendleton former record holder and 8 times winner of the Catford Hill Climb was cheered on by a vast crowd. Coming a creditable 53rd from a start list of 83, he commented - “I was very apprehensive because the last time I rode the ‘Catford’ was in 2000 when I found it hard but this time I really suffered. I used to be sprinting over the finish line and feeling great, but not today”
