Mosquito Bikes London/SE Cross League 13
The 13th race of the Mosquito Bikes London/South East England Cyclo Cross League held on January 3 at Herne Hill Velodrome, London and organised by VC Londres.
Seniors
A long, long string of riders filled the velodrome centre as Dan Duguid led out the field. Duguid and junior Taylor Johnstone were quick to pull out a small lead back to Matt Zeitz, who in turn had established a narrow margin over the rest.
As the race progressed Johnstone was to take the lead, but this was to last for no more than a lap when Duguid rejoined him, and the pair road together until Duguid attacked and was never headed to the flag.
With the top three sewn up, Phil Webb in fourth was being hunted down by Nigel Ling and at the line Webb just managed to hang onto the spot.
Women
In the women's race Corrine Hall was well up the field and was safe in first. Claire Beaumont suffered a mechanical and went missing from the fight for second, which eventually went to an impressive Delia Beddis. Nicky Hughes and Marya Sennema vied for third until the last moments of the race, and it was Hughes it made the podium.
The women's race was a definite highlight because not only was the top order places well contested, but lower in order a 5 women group formed in the early stages and was whittled down into smaller battles as the race progressed. Great stuff!
The women's race was reflective of an event that saw many, many great battles in what amounted to a sparkling contest. Well done to all for coping with the tricky conditions.
Veterans
First veteran Matt Seaton had been under pressure from Jon Lyons throughout as the two went first and second. Further down the field the fight for veteran honours had been intense, as Doug Fox held off Stuart Lockyear and then Russ Jones and George Higgs fought it out.
Juniors
Johnstone was top junior, with Ciaran O'Grady next, the latter having been involved in a great struggle for position with a large group of riders. Wild Sinclair rounded of the top three, whilst a big cheer must go out to Nicholas Smith who had been in the mix but had been forced to run a lap after a mechanical.

Youth
Jack Finch led from start to finish, but he had to work hard to stay clear of Ashley Dennis, Jack Spicer and Liam Cowell, the last two having to sprint to decide their contest.
Another great sprint was played out by Elliot Phillips and Kieran Lawrie. Alex Peter fell heavily on the first lap, he lost a lot of time as he gathered himself together and then progressed back up the field.
As was the case with the seniors, the youth race also offered up some great fights such as Emily Barnes who claimed first girl by mixing it with the boys big time.
